"With A Mind To Kill" Goldsboro Books Edition

I have to say I've always been impressed with Goldsboro Books located in the UK.  Firstly they sell fine quality limited edition hardback first printings.  Secondly the books are usually signed by the author (which is very cool).  Lastly, and probably most importantly, the books are carefully packed for their voyages around the world.

My latest acquisition from Goldsboro Books arrived a couple of weeks ago.  This was copy 335 of Anthony Horowitz's latest James Bond adventure "With A Mind To Kill" published by Jonathan Cape, and it travelled all the way to Australia in perfect condition.

I know I've said it before but even without the dust jacket the hardback cover of this title looks fantastic.

This is the third Goldsboro Books - Anthony Horowitz title I have in my collection.  "Trigger Mortis" was limited to 1000 copies, "Forever And A Day" limited to 750 and "With A Mind To Kill" limited to 1000.  All three also have sprayed edges: silver, light blue and black.  I'm really pleased I have them in my Bond collection.

Canterbury Books Visit

A few weeks ago I visited Canterbury Books.  It was my first visit in almost two years and after all the lockdowns it was great to see the store still going strong.

I spoke to Helen, one of the owners, asking permission to take these photos and discussing the fate of several secondhand book stores around Melbourne during the past year.  I then enquired if she had any James Bond novels and she pointed me toward a copy of Anthony Horowitz's "Trigger Mortis" (for just $2 !!!).  There were plenty of other quality books for sale at great prices too but currently no other Bond's. 

Before I left, Helen said I had to have a look at a gift left on her store windowsill by a local artist.  She was chuffed to find this book a few days earlier and open it at the bookmarked page.  Very impressive.

"Forever And A Day" Appears In Oz

Less than one month ago, on May 31st, the latest James Bond continuation novel "Forever And A Day" was released in the UK.   Published by Jonathan Cape it is the second Bond novel written by Anthony Horowitz following the success of his "Trigger Mortis" in 2015.

It always takes a little longer for UK titles to reach Australia and last week I noticed paperback copies of "Forever And A Day" starting to hit the shelves here.

Then on the weekend at my local Dymocks store I noticed a large display of the same books for sale so purchased one for myself.

Today a signed hardback copy of the same novel arrived in the post.  Purchased from Waterstones in the UK it has yellow edges and is signed by the author.

And finally here's the hardback and paperback editions together.  I've already scanned the cover of the paperback and added it to PizGloria.com here.  I think the cover looks great and very modern.

I'm hoping for further editions to arrive in the post, as well as some promotional material to display here on this blog, but only time will tell.

New "Trigger Mortis" Paperback Arrives

The newly released US paperback edition of "Trigger Mortis" written by Anthony Horowitz and published by Harper has just arrived in the mail.  The cover was designed by Gregg Kulick and illustrated by Patrick Leger and is slightly reminiscent of the old Pan painted covers of the 50's and '60s, as well as the Richie Fahey US Retro Series published by Penguin in the 00's.

I really like this edition of "Trigger Mortis".  In fact it would be great to have all of the recent James Bond continuation novels re-published with similar covers so they form a new series.  But for the moment I can only dream...

"Trigger Mortis" Paperback In Oz Stores

The latest edition of "Trigger Mortis" by Anthony Horowitz is now available on Australian book shelves.  This paperback edition, published by Orion, has a great cover design by Keenan.  My wife and I visited several book stores today before finally purchasing this copy at Thesaurus Books in Brighton.

Considering there were no book purchases for PizGloria.com for the first five months of this year, July has proven to be a great month for new books to this website.

While driving home I noticed this billboard on Nepean Highway and quickly did a U-turn to take this photo.

On another note, I visited Out Of Print Books etc. in Caulfield the other day.  It was great to see several other customers in the store.  As usual they had at least 10 Bond paperbacks but none for me this time.

I also visited Cornerlamp Secondhand Books in Moorabbin.  Unfortunately there are signs on the window explaining the lease is ending soon.  Hopefully that just means this store will be moving and not closing down.

And just one last thing... while at Thesaurus Books today the girl behind the counter, Kate, recognised me and brought out a coffee book she thought I might be interested in; a copy of The James Bond Archives.  Obviously I've seen this on the web but not physically.  I had a quick flick through and it looks great so I may have to consider purchasing this in the future.

Waterstones Trigger Mortis Edition Arrives

I received another copy of Anthony Horowitz's "Trigger Mortis" in the mail last week.

This first edition hardback was excusively released by the UK book store chain Waterstones and has two features which distinguishes it from the standard first edition of the same book: 1) The dust jacket is black instead of silver, and 2) there are extra pages at the back to include a reproduced draft TV treatment by Ian Fleming titled "Murder On Wheels".  Some of this original material by Fleming was woven into the "Trigger Mortis" story by Horowitz.

This is now the third hardback copy of this book in my collection.  The other two are the Goldsboro Edition (which I have written about previously) and the standard hardback.  All of these are UK printings.  I did happen to see several US versions available for sale at Singapore Airport recently but all the dust jackets were damaged around the spine so I decided not to buy one.

Two More Bond Books Acquired

I've just managed to purchase two more Bond books.  The first is a US proof copy published by Harper Collins of "Trigger Mortis" by Anthony Horowitz.  I've been trying to find a copy of this book for several months now.

I had the second book on order at Thesaurus Books for a couple of months and fortunately it's arrived.  This omnibus published by Vintage contains the same three titles as "The Blofeld Trilogy" published by Penguin in 2010 ("Thunderball", "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" and "You Only Live Twice"), but the title change suggests this book will be the closest thing we'll get to a movie tie-in for the latest Daniel Craig - James Bond film "Spectre".  It even has an introduction by Michael G Wilson and Barbara Broccoli. 

The cover image is also reminiscent of the Vintage 007 Series.  So far I've been unable to identify the cover artist though.

Further Additions To My Bond Book Collection

Last week I received two Bond books in the mail.  Both were "Dr No" movie tie-ins published by Pan books in 1962.  However unlike the existing copy of the same UK movie tie-in already in my collection, these two both display "Great Pan" on the cover instead of "Pan".  There are other differences and further details can be found on the Slight Cover Variations page of PizGloria.com under 11.  Here's a photo of the books (with many thanks to Alan T).

I also visited a couple of book stores selling new books.  The first was Thesaurus Books in Brighton where I purchased two books: "The Man With The Golden Typewriter" which is a collection of letters written by Ian Fleming and edited by Fergus Fleming, and a copy of "Goldfinger" published by Vintage to accompany the release of "Trigger Mortis" by Anthony Horowitz.

And finally, I also visited a Dymocks store where I saw a copy of the new Ian Fleming omnibus "The Spectre Trilogy" for sale.  I would have purchased it but I already have a copy on order.

Trigger Mortis Goldsboro Edition

I received a hardback copy of "Trigger Mortis" in the mail yesterday.  This is the Goldsboro edition limited to just 1,000 copies and signed by the author, Anthony Horowitz.

It's a really nice first edition and also includes silver edges to the pages and a thin red ribbon that can be used as a book mark.  A nice addition to my library.

Also, following the premiere of "Spectre" in London a few days ago this quiz has appeared online.  A work colleague pointed it out to me today and other Bond fans may also find it interesting: How well do you know James Bond movies?  A bit of fun, although I'm being picky by saying that one question is technically wrong, especially as the film in particular is previously mentioned. 

Trigger Mortis Arrives In The Mail

The latest James Bond novel "Trigger Mortis" by Anthony Horowitz was released on September 7, 2015.  Since its release the reviews I've read for the novel have almost all been unanimously positive.  However I haven't had a copy of the novel to scan to add to the PizGloria.com website.  That all changed last week when I received this complimentary trade paperback in the mail from the kind people at Hachette Australia.  

As far as I'm aware there are no obvious differences from the UK Orion printing apart from the fact this copy was "printed and bound in Australia".  So if you're interested in purchasing an Australian edition of this novel click here, although you may have to check with Booktopia to ensure it's the Australian copy you're going to receive (just in case !).

Missing Aston Martin DBS + Trigger Mortis On Oz Shelves

My Mum contacted me a fortnight ago as she'd read that a real James Bond car was temporarily on display in a building near the City until mid-September.  The car in particular was an Aston Martin DBS's featured in the film "On Her Majesty's Secret Service".

So last Friday during my lunch break I drove to the VACC building to check out the vehicle.  I've seen this car twice before: once at Armageddon Expo 2012 when I also met George Lazenby and the other time at the "Designing 007 - 50 Years Of Bond Style" Exhibition in 2013.  The car is owned by fellow Melburnian, Sigi Zidziunas, and from my recollection of the conversation I had with him in 2013 he's owned the car for several years after importing it from Portugal.  He quickly gained provenance and has displayed the car at a number of conventions and exhibitions. And I have to say... every time I see this car it looks fantastic.

Unfortunately though I wasn't to see it that Friday.  Mid-September arrived a little early and the car had been removed from display on Thursday, September 10, the day before my visit.  I still managed to grab some snaps of the lobby where it was parked just 24 hours earlier.  (Maybe I could just photoshop it in !)

Here's some snaps I took of the same DBS back in 2013 at the "Designing 007 - 50 Years Of Bond Style" Exhibition at the Melbourne Museum.  There were actually two identical DBS's used during filming of the 1969 Bond film but I'm not sure where the other one is located.

Fortunately I was not completely out of luck last Friday.  This English Second Language copy of "For Your Eyes Only" published by Longman in 1982 arrived in the mail.  This is one of several ESL books I've purchased recently.  I think I'm getting close to collecting them all now.

With some warmer weather arriving last Saturday my wife and I decided to drive to Mornington. As well as visiting a few gift shops we also dropped into Farrell's Bookshop.  A great independant book store with a wide variety of new books I was pleased to see copies of  the newly released Bond novel "Trigger Mortis" by Anthony Horowitz on the shelf.  This was the first time I had physically seen the book.

 

 

We also travelled just down the road to the second-hand store Books By The Bay where many Bond paperbacks sat on the shelf but unfortunately I had them all.  Still it was good to pay a visit.

And finally... I noticed this pile of "Carte Blanche" books on a shelf in a local department store.  They were 25% off but considering "Trigger Mortis" has just been released and this book was published in 2011 I'd be increasing that discount.
