European Holiday 2025 - Oslo, Norway

My wife and I are currently taking a replacement bus service instead of our scheduled train.  The views outside the windows of mountains with huge fjords at their base are incredible.

Obviously we'd booked the entire train journey from Oslo to Bergen, but track problems after Voss meant we were forced to disembark there and scramble with our luggage for any of the six buses we were told were awaiting us train passengers.

As our full bus pulled away from the train station my wife and I both felt very fortunate.  We watched as other passengers were still trying to board their bus, while others stood, confused expressions on their faces, waiting beside their luggage with crossed fingers for more buses to arrive soon.  I think someone at the train company had calculated wrong as six buses weren't enough.

We even had a poor woman who explained to the driver she'd put her luggage under our bus only to find no spare seats as she boarded.  It was a shamozzle.  The kind of shamozzle that becomes a holiday story that will be repeated forever by every passenger on our train today.

Oslo was beautiful.   We both found the city relaxing to explore, the buildings were interesting, the waterways very scenic, the art controversial... and unlike Sorrento, Paris or Nice, no one lit a cigarette or puffed a vape while we ate in a restaurant.  In fact we saw few people smoking at all, which was an interesting phenomenon considering we were still in Europe.

Upon venturing from our hotel located near Central Station we came upon Bok & Media.  A lovely book store that it turned out had no James Bond novels as it only sold religious books and items.   The friendly guys behind the counter had already allowed me to take some photos so here they are anyway:

Next up was Norli Eldorado book store selling both Nordic and English language books.  My wife loved this store.  And the staff were great.  They even disappeared for a couple of minutes to rummage through their store room before returning with an English language copy of "Casino Royale" their computer inventory said was supposed to be on the shelf.

At Central Station there was also Ark Bok Handel.  This store had all the books required to accompany a person on a train journey to elsewhere in Norway, or perhaps even an adjoining country.  As with most of the stores I visited on this holiday there was the obligatory copy of Anthony Horowitz's "With A Mind To Kill".

These were the three book stores we visited in Oslo.  I'm sure there were plenty more we could have visited but we didn't want to spend all our time book hunting.  Instead we located some record stores where I purchased CD's created by the Norwegian music artist who had inspired us to travel to this country: Susanne Sundfor.

If you've seen the film "Oblivion" starring Tom Cruise and Morgan Freeman you've already heard Susanne's amazing voice as she sings the theme song in the closing credits.  One day I hope she'll be offered the opportunity to sing a James Bond theme song, afterall another Norwegian band, A-ha, have already sung "The Living Daylights" back in 1987.  Here's four of her albums:

New 'Australian Editions' Page

A fellow James Bond book collector, Jochem G., contacted me late last year to propose adding a new page to PizGloria.com featuring Australian editions of Bond publications.  Personally I'd never thought of doing this as I believed there were only a couple of Pan Books "Special Australian Editions" released back in the 1960's, plus the Penguin "Casino Royale" movie tie-in from 2006 featuring a full head silhouette of the woman on the cover which is only partly shown on the UK edition.

So he sent me an email with a spreadsheet and images attached, and it was then I realised how many other Aussie publications actually existed.

So here's a link to the new Australian Editions page with all images provided by Jochem from his own extensive James Bond collection.

Just a note too, if you complete reading this page and want to visit more of the website, click [Previous] instead of [Next] as next will just take you to the home page.

Sun Theatre Bondathon Film Festival

Last night I attended the 1983 James Bond film "Never Say Never Again" at the Sun Theatre in Yarraville with another Aussie Bond fan.  The cinema is currently screening all the James Bond films as part of a 'Bondathon' from November 30 to December 3.

Yesterday afternoon they also screened the Climax TV episode of "Casino Royale" from 1954 starring Barry Nelson and the comedy spoof film of the same name from 1967.  My friend attended these screenings and commented to me they were much better than he remembered.  For me though, I was only interested in "NSNA".  I wanted to see it at a cinema again for the first time in 40 years.

And what did we both think of "NSNA" ?  Obviously some scenes involving computers are a bit dated, and the soundtrack in places isn't great, but overall we felt the film still holds up very well.  And Sean Connery in his last performance as Bond redeems himself from his "Diamond's Are Forever" sleep walk.

If last night was any indication I definitely recommend attending other films in the festival.  Plus there's this great passport the cinema is giving away to people which they'll stamp for each film attended from the Bond programme.

Just one thing though, be sure you know the way back from Yarraville to Melbourne with all the roadworks and detours currently occurring, otherwise you could end up visiting Coode Island on your journey home like I did !

Latest Bond Paperbacks In Oz

Earlier this year, in April, to celebrate the 70th anniversary of "Casino Royale", Ian Fleming Publications released a new series of paperbacks.  This series includes the 12 James Bond adventures, 2 short story anthologies and 2 non-Bond novels: "Thrilling Cities" and "The Diamond Smugglers".

As I'm in Australia these books have taken a long time to hit bookshelves here.  In fact I was concerned they'd never arrive.  However when I visited the Dymocks City store on Friday I was pleasantly surprised to find two copies available: "Casino Royale" and "Moonraker".  There was also the mass market paperback size version of Anthony Horowitz's "With A Mind To Kill" which I have never physically seen before either.

I purchased the Horowitz Bond novel which I'll add to PizGloria.com when possible.  As for the Fleming titles I hope to organise a set of these new paperbacks soon.

Signet "Casino Royale" Arrives

I received a new addition to my James Bond paperback collection today, a copy of "Casino Royale" published by Signet in the US.

This is the 27th printing of this title from Signet.  This particular cover has a circular sticker on the cover promoting the 1967 comedy/spoof film version starring David Niven as 007.  The sticker reads "Now an exciting new motion picture".

I already have another copy of this Signet title with a similar sticker on the cover, however the sticker on my first copy has more of a cog wheel appearance.  It contains identical text though.  Both copies also have 007 printed in the top left corner.

There are two other versions of this cover in my collection.  The same cover with 007 printed in the top left corner sans sticker and another copy without the 007 and again without a sticker.

If you're wondering where I purchased this latest copy it was from John F. in New Zealand who is currently selling his entire Bond book collection.  There are plenty of other great items still available too.

New Secondhand Bookshop Open

It's not uncommon for me to write about an oft visited book store that has just permanently closed.  So it was great to recently discover a new secondhand book shop in Prahran.

Snailfish Independent Book Store on Greville Street, just off Chapel, has been trading for a few months now.   I spoke to the owner, Nathan, and he was very enthusiastic about his books and business.  He explained that he plans to concentrate on stocking political, art and fiction titles while also saving books from ending up in landfill.

After a brief chat I had a wander through the two rooms of book shelves.  I managed to find two Ian Fleming titles, a nice Pan Books - Raymond Hawkey series copy of "Thunderball" from the 1960's and a 2019 copy of "Casino Royale" from Arcturus Publishing Group

I wish Nathan every success with Snailfish and I plan to visit again soon.

The Spoils Of Adelaide

For anyone reading this blog you'll be pleased to know this is the last post from our recent trip to South Australia.

First here's what I call the "spoils" of our trip; the seven books I purchased.  I already have all of these titles but the covers here are either similar or an improvement on the condition of the existing copies in my collection.

The concentration on Ian Fleming's "Moonraker" was pure coincidence.  The Pan Books cover on the left is rare as it's the first and only printing with this cover from 1956.  The white Pan cover is a great copy.

The orange Penguin "Casino Royale" was only published in Australia (along with a similar cover by Penguin for "From Russia With Love") so it's not common, especially outside of Oz.  The other two covers were too good condition to pass by.

Finally here's a Still Life series copy of Ian Fleming's "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" from early 1970's.  There's no spine creases so I suspect it's never been read.  A paperback nearly 50 years old in this condition for sale at AU$14 is quite scarce so I couldn't pass it up.

That's the end of my Bond book purchases from South Australia, so now here's some photos from our travels:

On the road...

The blue lake, Mt Gambier, once a volcano crater

Umpherston Sinkhole (Balumbul), Mt Gambier.

Church and lake at a winery (Maggie Beer's) in the Barossa Valley.

A couple of beaches near McLaren Vale, some fisherman caves in the sand cliffs and a visit to a winery/craft beer brewery.

Random photos of the Pakistan and Indian T20 cricket teams who also stayed in our hotel for the Twenty20 International World Cup (eventually won by England).  One morning I even found myself in the lift with Virat Kohli who I'd watched on TV the night before scoring 50 runs.

Random photos taken while walking around Adelaide including Rundle Mall.

Chocolates bought while visiting the Haigh's factory.

Photos of the Adelaide Christmas Pageant.  I'd never heard of it before but it's obviously a big thing in Adelaide as it's been going for 90 years.

The journey home including a painted silo and a flooded river...

In conclusion, if you ever get the chance, I highly recommend visiting South Australia.  You may return with some great books but you'll definitely return with some great experiences and memories... the spoils of Adelaide.
