A Quick Intermission From Our Trip To Piz Gloria

Just a quick intermission while part way through blog entries of our recent trip to Europe and in particular Piz Gloria. Unfortunately I'm getting a bit behind in my blog entries.

My wife and I have been back in Australia for several weeks now and last week I managed to purchase a couple of "Young Bond" paperback reprints from two great book stores in Brighton.

The first was Top Titles Books where I purchased a copy of Charlie Higson's "Silverfin".

The second was Thesaurus Books which is always a pleasure to visit.  Here I purchased a copy of "Blood Fever" by the same author.

Both books are published by Puffin and feature the new "Young Bond" logo which was originally created for the latest continuation novel "Shoot To Kill" by Steve Cole.
I've created a new page on PizGloria.com for this series of covers by Kev Walker.  To see it click here.  Hopefully I can find and add the remaining three Higson titles in this series soon.

European Tour - Piz Gloria (Switzerland) - Part 1

At about 9:30 in the morning my wife, our friend Mona and I boarded the cable car in Murren for the ten minute journey to the top of Schilthorn.  The large cable car was only partly full but everyone seemed excited to be on their way.
Half way up we changed cars at the Birg station.  We could now all see Piz Gloria, the location of Ernst Stavro Blofeld's scientific laboratory and allergy clinic from the James Bond film "On Her Majesty's Secret Service".
On arrival we immediately made our way to the Piz Gloria restaurant.  As we were staying in Murren we had a complementary breakfast included in our visit.  We had also booked lunch so it was going to be a long and enjoyable morning.
Once I started walking around the restaurant I was amazed to see how many Bond references there were.  From the "007" printed on every second window...

... to the life-size cut out of George Lazenby near the food buffet (with an explanation on the back of the restaurant's relevance to the film)...

... to each plate adorning the "007" logo.

The menu featured meals and drinks "inspired" by Bond, there were plaques on the walls...

but the greatest reminder that the film was shot there (apart from the awesome ever revolving floor) was the golden balustrade, now adorned with rare rocks from around the world.  This balustrade was not only featured in the film but during a fight between Teresa "Tracy" Di Vicenzo and one of Blofeld's guards the latter's head ended up being smashed through it.

After enjoying a delicious buffet breakfast we three then ventured outside.  Initially when we arrived we could see a staff member clearing the snow from the platform and helipad outside.
However in the hour or so since then the sun was out, the sky was blue and there was not a breath of wind.  It was fantastic weather.  We weren't allowed to the viewing platform a 100 metres away because of the thick snow, but that didn't matter.
The surrounds of the Piz Gloria restaurant aided by the Swiss Alpine vista was simply stunning.
There were two more life size Bond cut-outs, one of which happened to end up holding one of my PizGloria.com cards for a laugh.
After spending at least half an hour outside we walked back into the building to visit the "Bond Shop" and "Bond World 007".  Click here for Part 2.

European Tour - Interlaken / Murren (Switzerland)

After Bern in Switzerland we then progressed by train to Interlaken.  Here's a photo of the view from our hotel room.  Amazing !
The whole town was surrounded by mountains so it wasn't hard to be awe inspired by the view in every direction.
I managed to find an "ex libris" book store but there were no Bonds.
There were some Schilthorn / James Bond magnets available in one of the souvineer stores but I let them go.
We also walked past this travel agency promoting and selling tickets to Schilthorn, with Piz Gloria as a James Bond film location being one of the main attractions.
Upon leaving Interlaken we caught the train to Lauterbrunnen.  It was at this station that Bond / Sir Hilary Bray was met by Irma Brunt before their helicopter ride to Piz Gloria in "On Her Majesty's Secret Service".
We then caught a short cable car ride followed by a smaller train to Murren at the base of Schilthorn. This was the same town where the Bond film crew and actors stayed during the filming at Piz Gloria. Piz Gloria was just a short cable car ride away.
Our hotel was just near the Schilthorn cable car station. Yet again the vista from our hotel room was incredible.
Our hotel even had a James Bond Menu and the WiFi code was 007 of course !
If you do visit Murren be sure to purchase something from the "Exile On Main Street" store. They are the official suppliers of clothing to Piz Gloria. Most of the clothes display the Piz Gloria name and are an excellent souvenir. If you can't make it to Murren here's their website: www.Piz-Gloria.com
And here's some more photos of Murren before we caught the cable car to Piz Gloria the next morning.
And finally... I snapped this sign at the base of the Trummelbach Falls. Mr Lazenby is certainly the face of James Bond in these parts !
